Keith's Journey: Finding Hope, Home, and Independence
Keith has been supported by Penumbra’s Papermill services for over a decade, and his journey is one of resilience, growth, and finding a place to call home.
Before coming to Papermill, Keith spent many years moving between hospital settings and supported accommodation. When he was first introduced to Papermill Gardens, he remembers visiting his flat and immediately feeling something different. It wasn’t just a place to stay, it felt like home.
Somewhere safe, comfortable, and his own.
“That was it,” he said. “I wanted to move in right away.”
Recently, Keith transitioned to our Papermill Outreach service, where he now receives support to maintain his independent living and stay connected to his community. Today, he manages his own home, cooks his own meals, and keeps his space just the way he likes it.
“I cook everything myself, I do my housework… my place is always clean,” he shared proudly.
Keith credits much of his progress to the consistent support he’s received. Staff have worked alongside him to build routines, develop coping strategies, and grow his confidence. In the past, everyday situations could feel overwhelming, but now he feels more able to pause, reflect, and respond calmly.
“I think before I react now,” he said. “My mental health is better – I’m in charge.”
A big milestone for Keith was taking greater responsibility for his medication. What began as closely supported routines has gradually become something he manages himself, with staff there when needed. It’s one of many steps that have helped him feel more independent and in control of his life.
Keith has also taken part in a variety of activities over the years, from gardening projects to outdoor training programmes. One highlight was getting involved in Branching Out, a 12-week woodland ecotherapy programme. There, Keith learned practical skills and enjoyed being in nature. These experiences helped him build confidence, learn new skills, and connect with others.
Outside of structured activities, Keith enjoys socialising locally, visiting friends, and even helping others out.
“I clean my pal’s house,” he said, smiling – a reflection of the pride he takes in his independence and routine.
Keith recognises when he’s feeling stressed and uses techniques and calming strategies to manage those moments. With the support of staff, he’s developed tools that help him stay balanced and focused on what matters to him.
Looking back, Keith knows it has taken time to get where he is today.
“It’s been a long time,” he reflected, “but I’m content with where I am now.”
For Keith, Papermill Outreach has been key to that progress – offering the right support at the right time, while empowering him to live life on his own terms.
His message to others is simple:
“I want people to get the support they need, so they can get better and move out into the community.”
And as Keith likes to say:
“The future is bright, so I wear shades.”
