Leaving a gift in your Will - FAQs
Writing a Will gives you the peace of mind that your affairs are in order. After taking care of your loved ones, writing a Will can also be an opportunity to leave a lasting gift to the causes that you care most about. At Penumbra Mental Health, gifts in Wills can help transform lives of the thousands of Individuals we support each year.
How would my gift be used?
1:1 support
We offer practical and emotional recovery-focused 1:1 support. We help people manage their homes, build relationships and pursue activities, interests and opportunities that are important to them.
Practical support
Our practical support focuses on areas of wellbeing that are important to those we work with. This could include recovery, employment, homelessness, self harm or addiction.
Peer work
Peer workers have lived experience of managing mental ill health. They use their experience of recovery to help others develop skills to manage their mental health and wellbeing.
Housing support
We have a range of projects that offer housing and support. In some, staff are available 24/7 and in others staff visit on a regular basis.
Crisis support
We provide support on a short-term basis at times of crisis. In Edinburgh we have a dedicated crisis centre.
What information do I need to include?
The main things to include are Penumbra Mental Health’s name, address and registered charity number:
Penumbra Mental Health, Norton Park, 57 Albion Road, Edinburgh, EH7 5QY.
Scottish registered charity no: SC010387
How do I choose a solicitor?
Making your Will or making a codicil to your current will are important decisions. If you are considering leaving a legacy to Penumbra Mental Health we would advise that you consult your solicitor to receive reliable and professional advice.
It can be difficult to choose from the hundreds of solicitors available. Penumbra Mental Health would be happy to send you a list of local solicitors from the Law Society. You can also contact them directly.
In Scotland, contact the Law Society of Scotland at www.lawscot.org.uk
In England and Wales, go to www.lawsociety.org.uk
If you are planning on leaving a gift in your Will to the Home, we would love for you to let us know so that we can keep you informed of areas of our work that may interest you.
Gift types
The terms used when leaving a gift in your Will can sometimes be confusing. The most common types of legacy are:
Pecuniary
Leaving a specific sum of money. The value of this will decrease over time, as the cost of living increases.
Residuary
Leaving the total or a percentage of the value of your estate after all other bequests and costs have been deducted.
Specific
Leaving a particular named item as a gift eg a piece of jewellery, furniture or a painting.
Thank you!
Legacies large and small keep our work alive. Please help make sure we are able to support future generations of people in Scotland work towards recovery by remembering Penumbra Mental Health in your Will. Thank you.
